World ID Day / MIDA Launch
31 May 2005

31 May had been declared World Interior Design Day by the world body IFI (International Federation of Interior Architects and Designers). IPDM launched its annual Malaysian Interior Design Awards (MIDA) 2005 on 31 May 2005 amid the fanfare of celebrating the World Interior Design Day. The event was held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Kuala Lumpur and was attended by about 170 members, Industry Partners and the media.

The President, Ar Chris Yap, in his welcome speech stressed the Institute’s desire to join IFI, the worldwide body representing over 35,000 Interior Designers in 40 countries. The World ID Day is also to create an awareness within the Malaysian society of all things related to the design of interior spaces.

IPDM has been organising the Awards annually since 1999 and this year will honour excellence in the interior design field in seven (7) categories, namely Public & Institutional, Leisure & Entertainment, Hotels & Restaurants, Offices & Space Planning, Retailing & Exhibitions, Residential and Student Works. A jury of international, regional and local design luminaries will judge the submissions, which close on 31 July 2005.

The winners for the awards were announced during the IPDM Annual Dinner on Friday, 2 September 2005 at the KLCC Convention Centre, Kuala Lumpur, where the Guest-of-honour was the Minister of Primary Industries, Plantations & Commodities, YB Dato’ Peter Chin.

IPDM was also the co-organiser of DEX05 – the interior design exhibition held from 13 to 16 October 2005, at the Putra World Trade Centre.

Launching of MIDA 2005 & Sarawak Protem Committee in Kuching
5-7 May 2005

IPDM President Ar Chris Yap and Office Bearers made a trip to Kuching, Sarawak with dual intentions. First, it was to establish contact with members in Sarawak, whose number stood at 60 at last count. This agenda was enhanced by meeting up with the Protem Committee members on 5 May 2005.

The night of 6 May 2005 was historic as MIDA 2005 was launched in East Malaysia for the first time in its 6-year history. The press coverage and attendance was overwhelming with 5 news releases over the following weeks covering the event. Interior Design as a profession is slowly by surely staking its claim as an event in the design scene of Kuching and hopefully will spread to the rest of Sarawak as urbanisation takes its foothold.

It had been a hugely successful trip both from the Council's point of view as well as the Sarawak members' and it is IPDM's earnest hope that the momentum built up from the trip gains to achieve great heights for the Interior Design fraternity and only time can tell.
